In the last few decades there has been an increasing interest in the possibilities of recycling. Many local councils and authorities now offer a recycling collection service on a bi-weekly, monthly, or quarterly rotation. Generally the refuse considered suitable for recycling is: paper, cardboard, newspapers, aluminium cans, and some plastics.

Businesses

If you are a business – particularly one involved in the hospitality industry – you may be able to negotiate to have mixed glass, cardboard and plastic bales, wood, plaster board, and toner cartridges collected in your recycling service. Some areas require pre-sorting of the recyclable waste prior to collection, while others offer co-mingled recycling bins with the sorting done at a recycling centre or materials recovery facility nearby.

Biodegradable Materials

In an effort to reduce the amounts of waste being sent to land fill sites, some councils are now introducing green bins – bins for kitchen waste, and other biodegradable and compostable materials. The refuse from these bins is taken to a composting facility and processed for use on council-run properties and private gardens.
